Pregnancy rhinitis describes allergy-like symptoms, but they\u2019re not actually due to an immune response like allergies are. Instead, they are caused by fluctuating hormones. This is why they may not be responding to antihistamines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do normally experience allergies, you may have noticed they seem worse now that you are pregnant. This is also completely normal. Common symptoms of allergies include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Itchy, watery eyes<\/li><li>Sinus pressure<\/li><li>Congestion<\/li><li>Runny nose<\/li><li>Sneezing<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"treating-allergies-during-pregnancy\">Treating <a href=\"https:\/\/allergyasthmanetwork.org\/allergies\/pregnancy-allergies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Allergies During Pregnancy<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Like with any other condition you\u2019ll experience during pregnancy, the goal of treating <a href=\"https:\/\/entsalem.com\/allergy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">allergies<\/a> is to relieve symptoms without affecting the baby.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"best-ways-to-manage-allergies\">Best Ways to Manage Allergies<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Ideally, you should try to manage allergies by reducing or eliminating your exposure to allergens. Strategies include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Practicing avoidance of known allergens whenever possible, including staying out of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityofsalem.net\/Pages\/minto-brown-island-park.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Minto-Brown Island Park<\/a> when pollen counts are high<\/li><li>Showering and changing clothes right away after spending time outdoors<\/li><li>Bathing pets no more than once per week<\/li><li>Deep cleaning your home, especially bedding, carpeting and drapes<\/li><li>Running the air conditioning or installing a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"managing-allergies-with-medications\">Managing Allergies with Medications<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Talk to your doctor before starting any medications or supplements to treat allergies if you\u2019re pregnant or breastfeeding so they can help you weigh the benefits versus the risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are some common allergy medications and whether they\u2019re considered safe to take during pregnancy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Older antihistamines such as chlorpheniramine, dexchlorpheniramine and hydroxyzine are considered safe to take during pregnancy by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Newer antihistamines such as Claritin and Zyrtec may also be safe.<\/li><li>Medicated nasal sprays like Nasonex and Flonase are considered safe to treat severe congestion.<\/li><li>Immunotherapy may be continued during pregnancy, but it is not recommended to start allergy shots during pregnancy.
