{"id":9348,"date":"2022-02-09T16:44:14","date_gmt":"2022-02-10T00:44:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/entsalem.com\/?p=9348"},"modified":"2024-05-21T14:45:02","modified_gmt":"2024-05-21T21:45:02","slug":"hearing-aids-babies-the-first-6-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entsalem.com\/hearing-aids-babies-the-first-6-months\/","title":{"rendered":"Hearing Aids &amp; Babies: The First 6 Months"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In 2000, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearingloss.org\/programs-events\/advocacy\/know-your-rights\/early-hearing-detection-intervention-act-ehdi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI)<\/a> guidelines were created to make sure <a href=\"https:\/\/entsalem.com\/hearing\/hearing-aids\/pediatric-hearing-aids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">all children<\/a> got the help they needed. This program ensures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>All babies are screened for hearing loss no later than <strong>one month of age.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If a baby does not pass the screening, they must get a diagnostic hearing test no later than <strong>three months of age<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Children diagnosed with hearing loss must receive intervention services no later than <strong>six months of age.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Center for Disease Control estimates that with the EHDI program in place, about 98% of all children born in the United States have had their hearing screened. This enables infants to get treatment for their hearing loss early. They consist of four main parts: the microphone, which picks up sounds in the environment; the processor, which amplifies sounds; the receiver, which delivers sound to the ear; and the battery, which powers the device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though hearing aids are usually associated with older people, people of all ages can wear hearing aids, including babies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many styles of hearing aids. Your child\u2019s audiologist will make a recommendation for a style that works best for their type and degree of hearing loss. Most babies are fit with behind-the-ear hearing aids because they fit better, and the earmold can easily be replaced as your child grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-often-are-earmolds-made\">How Often Are Earmolds Made?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The plastic earmold that connects the BTE hearing aid to the ear is fitted after an impression is taken of the ear. Once the earmold no longer fits comfortably, a new one will need to be made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"when-can-babies-start-wearing-hearing-aids\">When Can Babies Start Wearing Hearing Aids?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Babies can start wearing hearing aids once they receive a diagnostic hearing test, even as early as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boystownhospital.org\/knowledge-center\/hearing-aids-babies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two to three months of age<\/a>. Babies can have their hearing tested while they sleep using auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing. This test determines how well the inner ear and brain pathways for hearing are working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The audiologist then uses a computer to program the hearing aid to meet the needs of your child as indicated by the ABR test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-often-should-babies-wear-their-hearing-aids\">How Often Should Babies Wear Their Hearing Aids?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal is for your baby to wear their hearing aids during all waking hours. However, it takes time to get there.
