Experiencing an allergic reaction can be alarming, regardless of whether it’s mild or severe, and nearly 100 million people in the U.S. experience allergies each year. It’s important to know what to do after you experience an allergic reaction to maintain well-being. Taking the right steps can prevent future reactions and promote long-term health.
Following the Reaction
If you experience an allergic reaction resulting in anaphylaxis, seek emergency medical attention. Even if you used an EpiPen® you should still go to the hospital to be monitored for further symptoms.
Once the reaction has been treated and you are safe, it’s important to assess what happened and begin steps toward recovery.
After a reaction of any kind, take the following steps:
- Rest and allow your body to recover.
- Avoid any additional exposure to the allergen.
- Take antihistamines or other medications as advised by a doctor.
- Monitor for delayed or secondary symptoms, which can occur hours later.
- Document what you ate, touched or were exposed to prior to the reaction, as well as the time symptoms began and what symptoms you experienced.
Follow Up with a Doctor
Even if the reaction was mild, it’s a good idea to consult your doctor and an allergist. They can review the event and assess your allergy risk. An allergist can also conduct allergy testing to determine the potential cause and help you create an allergy action plan to prevent further reactions. If you already have known allergies, this is a good time to review your treatment plan and ensure your medications are up to date.
Preventing Future Reactions
Prevention becomes key after an allergic reaction. You can reduce your risk with a few practical steps:
- Wear a medical alert bracelet if you have a serious allergy
- Carry an EpiPen® if prescribed
- Educate those around you about your allergy and how to help in an emergency
- Avoid any known allergens
Allergic reactions can vary in severity and cause. Knowing what to do afterward helps you take control of your health to be better prepared for the future.
