Helping your child with allergy management is no mean feat, but it’s a bit easier in the summer, when you’re spending pretty much every day with them, than it is in the fall. Back-to-school season means they’re out of your care for most of the day and on their own if they have an allergy flare-up, so here’s our guide on how to set them up for success.

Build Their Support Network
They may be out of your care during the day, but that doesn’t mean your child is completely independent. Your child will have constant support and presence from other trusted adults, such as teachers, school nurses and coaches. Check in with this vast support network to make sure these adults know about your child’s allergies, what they’re allergic to, the severity of their symptoms and what your allergy management plan is if a reaction occurs. Make sure your child knows they can seek help from these adults if they start feeling symptomatic.
Ensure They Understand Their Allergies
Children are clever, and they understand a lot. Allergies are a large part of your child’s life, so have a discussion with them about their allergies to make sure they understand what’s happening and what to do. Some topics to cover include:
- What prompts allergy symptoms (the immune system overreacting to a harmless irritant)
- What particular allergens trigger their symptoms
- What symptoms indicate an allergic reaction
- How to avoid their allergens, if possible
Pack Their Backpack
In addition to notebooks, crayons and erasers, prepare your child by ensuring they pack allergy supplies that they may need. This may include:
- Two EpiPens® (and check the expiration dates!)
- Their inhaler
- Chewable or liquid antihistamines
- Some safe snacks
- Allergy ID and alert cards
- Medical alert jewelry
Teach your child about every item in this pack and make sure they feel confident in using them or asking for help.
Work With an Allergist
Build your child’s support network even further by getting an allergist on board. They can confirm what your child is allergic to with an allergy test and help you craft allergy management plans and emergency action plans for your child to make sure they’re always prepared.
