Soccer, baseball and softball are in full swing right now! Whether your kiddo is a member of a youth sports team or you’re on an intramural team with some buddies, summer sports are an excellent time to get outdoors, get some exercise and socialize a bit. They’re also, unfortunately, an excellent opportunity to encounter grass pollen. Here’s our guide on staying sane during the worst of allergy season so you can still enjoy the game.

The Opponent
The team you’re playing against is allergens, which are substances that trigger allergic reactions. The most common allergens during outdoor sports include:
- Grass pollen, especially on a sports field
- Tree pollen
- Dust kicked up by running around or by dry conditions
- Other people’s pets
- Poor air quality on warm, stagnant days
Gear Up
In addition to grabbing your disc golf bag or your child’s cleats, also consider grabbing sunglasses and a dust mask to shield your face from the pollen that’s flying through the air. If your allergy symptoms are frequently skin-related (e.g., hives), try wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants, if it’s not too hot. Reduce the allergens’ opportunity to land on you and trigger a reaction.
You can make an allergy gear bag with the following items:
- Wet wipes (to clean your face, hands or any surfaces)
- Extra tissues
- Allergy eye drops
- Nasal sprays
- Water bottle (to flush out allergens and stay hydrated)
- Emergency medications, if prescribed
Use Medications
Over-the-counter allergy medications can be highly effective at minimizing symptoms. Antihistamines reduce the itchy symptoms, such as sneezing, itchy eyes, itchy nose, watery eyes and runny nose. Decongestants help with sinus-related symptoms, such as congestion, a stuffy nose or sinus headaches. Antihistamines work best when they can accumulate in your system, so take one daily for best efficacy. Decongestants are great for quick relief.
If over-the-counter medications aren’t helping, it may be time to consult an allergist. They can diagnose your specific allergy, recommend some stronger medications or begin allergy treatment for long-lasting relief. To find out more, contact Willamette ENT & Facial Plastic Surgery.
