There are several things to adjust to when you start wearing hearing aids—including making sure they stay in place. While they should usually remain in your ears without an issue, poor fit, moisture and sweat or movement may cause them to fall out. At Willamette ENT & Facial Plastic Surgery, we recommend the following tips to help your devices remain in your ears comfortably.
Make Sure They’re In Correctly

Your hearing aids might fall out because they have not been inserted correctly. Make sure to wear each device in the correct ear. Once inserted, smaller models should sit flush with your ear canal and larger models should sit flush with your earlobe.
Use Hearing Aid Clips or Retention Cords
These accessories are designed to keep your hearing technology in place and are often particularly helpful for children and athletes. They attach to your hearing aids and clip onto your clothing, so that they don’t hit the ground if they slip from your ears.
Clean Your Devices Regularly
A buildup of dust or earwax can cause hearing aids to become dislodged, so it’s important to follow a regular cleaning routine.
Keep Your Ears Dry
Whether it’s sweat or rain, moisture can make it easy for your hearing aids to slip out. During exercise, it may be helpful to use a sweatband to keep your ears dry. You can also talk to your audiologist about moisture-resistant hearing aids.
Make Sure Your Hearing Aids Fit Properly
It may sound obvious, but hearing aids that fit inside of your ears well are less likely to fall out. During a fitting appointment, your audiologist will make sure your hearing aid is molded to the shape of your ear for an optimal fit.
