Dry, itchy eyes are an unfortunate side effect of allergy season. When you encounter irritants like pollen, dust mites, pet dander or other substances you’re sensitive to, your immune system overreacts and releases histamine. Histamine is a chemical in your body that triggers the allergy inflammation responsible for dry, red or itchy eyes.
Let’s take a look at a few different ways you can help ease dry eye this allergy season.
Allergen Avoidance
By avoiding allergens you’re sensitive to, you can help prevent the allergic reaction that causes your dry eyes. A few examples of allergen avoidance include:
- Choosing hypoallergenic pets when possible
- Avoiding green spaces like Salem parks and hiking trails on high-pollen days
- Keep windows closed or install allergy window screens during the spring and summer
- Clean your home regularly to minimize dust mites and mold
- Keep the humidity level in your home between 30 and 50 percent
- Run exhaust fans while showering or cooking
Implement a few of these strategies based on the allergens that trigger your reactions.
Eye Drops
Eye drops moisturize the eyes to lessen the severity of dry eyes. Allergy eye drops usually have antihistamines to minimize allergy inflammation, whereas regular dry eye drops focus mainly on moisturizing. If your allergies are severe, your allergist may recommend prescription eye drops.
Oral Allergy Medication
Oral allergy medications like antihistamines and mast cell inhibitors help prevent the release of histamine to minimize inflammation. Medication is a great short-term solution for mild allergy symptoms.
Allergy Immunotherapy
Allergy immunotherapy is a long-term treatment for people who don’t find sufficient relief from medication. There are two options for allergy immunotherapy: shots and drops.
Both allergy shots and drops work by gradually exposing your body to increasing doses of the allergen you’re sensitive to. Over time, this helps your immune system build tolerance, leading to a reduced allergic reaction.
